Theresienkrankenhaus will be completely closed by the end of 2027 and relocated to the Diakonissen-Krankenhaus (Diako). Up to 350 employees will lose their jobs, with redundancies confirmed. Vascular surgery, ENT and urology are already closing at the end of 2025; pneumology follows in 2026. Reason: rising material/operating costs, digitalization costs, and a lack of funding compared with municipal hospitals. Originally planned for 2029, now accelerated. Around 29,000 inpatients and 59,000 outpatients annually across both sites. Update (1 July 2026): The hospital's closure has been completed — inpatients were moved to the Diako on 28 and 30 June 2026, the emergency department closed on 30 June 2026, and since 1 July 2026 the Brüderklinikum Julia Lanz has concentrated its wards and emergency care at the Diako site. Outpatient services such as a dialysis practice and an emergency-doctor base remain at the Theresienkrankenhaus (City of Mannheim, 15 June 2026).
