The private Helios clinic (Fresenius Group) is closing on 30 June 2026, with the emergency department already on 31 December 2025. Reason: below-average occupancy (avg. 51 of 123 beds), a lack of a successor chief physician for internal medicine, and new legal requirements from the hospital reform. 232 employees are affected; Helios offers transfers to other sites (Titisee-Neustadt, Müllheim). The city and district want to buy the building for a medical care center (MVZ) with surgery/orthopedics. The citizens' initiative 'Rettet unser Krankenhaus' is protesting against the closure. Update (08.04.2026): The full closure on 30.06.2026 has been averted – the town of Breisach is taking over the hospital from 01.07.2026, becoming its owner again for the first time since 1972 (gesundheitsmarkt.de, 16.04.2026, citing Badische Zeitung of 08.04.2026).
