The roughly 14 km rail section between Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz and Großdeuben (Leipzig district) was fundamentally rebuilt from October 2015 for about EUR 92 million as part of the Saxony-Franconia Trunk Line expansion — including track renewal, about 17 km of overhead line, 42 switches, four rail bridges and a new pedestrian tunnel. Construction was largely completed with the commissioning of the electronic signal boxes in Böhlen and Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz at the end of 2019, with remaining exterior site works, per a construction notice, running until summer 2020. The goal is through-running of regional trains via Leipzig's City Tunnel toward south-western Saxony at speeds up to 160 km/h.
