MVG replans Neuperlach Süd U-Bahn depot, opening now mid-2030s

· Transport / rail

Location
Munich (Neuperlach Süd), Bavaria · 🇩🇪 Germany
Project
Neuperlach Süd U-Bahn depot (replanning because of double-track S-Bahn expansion and the U-Bahn branch towards Ottobrunn)
Investment
total cost not specified (provisions for later rail projects approx. EUR 28.6 million)
Status
Planned (replanning required; opening in the mid-2030s instead of the late 2020s)

MVG has published a feasibility study (report of 24 August 2026) according to which the planned Neuperlach Süd U-Bahn depot has to be replanned because it cannot easily be reconciled with the double-track S-Bahn expansion and the U-Bahn branch to Ottobrunn; the location of the buildings, the track layout and the road layout have to be reorganised. Instead of the end of the 2020s, commissioning is now expected only in the mid-2030s; the provisions for the later rail projects are estimated at about EUR 28.6 million, while the total cost cannot yet be reliably quantified. MVG is sticking with the site, whereas a citizens' initiative wants a review of moving maintenance and stabling to the future end of the U5 near Ottobrunn or Taufkirchen; MVG considers a U5 extension there realistic only in the 2040s. The date is a placeholder: only the mid-2030s are given, and the end of 2035 is used. (LOK Report, 24 Aug 2026, citing Süddeutsche Zeitung)
