The existing Nantenbach Curve, opened in 1994 (10.74 km, double-track, electrified), links the Main-Spessart line with the Hanover–Wuerzburg high-speed line north of Lohr am Main. As part of the Hanau–Wuerzburg/Fulda upgrade corridor (VDE 8.1), Deutsche Bahn presented initial plans in February 2024 for a roughly 19 km, largely tunnelled new-build section between Heigenbruecken and Nantenbach for 230 km/h operation, budgeted at about EUR 1.5 billion (2015 price basis). The project remains in an early planning phase; no firm completion date has been set, though the source list cites 2040.
