Munich Airport and Lufthansa Group signed a memorandum of understanding on 22 July 2026 to start planning the roughly €2bn Terminal 2 extension known as the 'T-Stiel', and extended their partnership to 2056. The 550-metre structure is to be built at right angles behind the terminal, adding capacity for around 10 million additional passengers a year and space for 12 large or 22 smaller aircraft; opening is scheduled for 2035. The airport expects 8,000 to 9,000 additional people to work there; the expansion will be financed through the joint Terminal 2 venture. A third runway is being ruled out. Second sources: Lufthansa Group newsroom, Abendzeitung München. Announced on 22.07.2026; according to Munich Airport the T-Stiel extension is to enter service in 2035, although the press release describes the start of operations only as "possible" and the project is still at the start of planning (Munich Airport press release, page dated 20.05.2026; the date 31.12.2035 is a placeholder for the year).
