DB Netz to renovate and lengthen two Nahe Valley Railway tunnels

On the Nahe Valley Railway (Bingen–Saarbrücken), DB Netz plans a general renovation of the two tunnels between Idar-Oberstein and Kirn: the Homericher Tunnel (currently 388 m) and the Enzweiler Tunnel (currently 466 m) will be lengthened (to 394 m and 476 m respectively) and their track spacing widened from 3.5 to 4 metres. The aims are a speed increase up to 160 km/h and structural provisions for later electrification of the section; the source list gives end of 2030 as the planned completion date.
