The Mittelsachsen transport association is building the 16 km line from Chemnitz to Limbach-Oberfrohna (Chemnitz Model stage 4) in five planning-approval sections. For section 1 (closing the rail ring and extending to Konkordiapark with six new stops) the state directorate issued its approval decision on 22 December 2025; construction was announced to start on 2 February 2026 at Falkeplatz and Mühlenstrasse. The first ring section is due by end-2027, the ring up to Ermafa-Passage in 2030 and the whole line in the mid-2030s, with a 30-minute service. Costs are in the mid three-digit million range (federal government 75, state 15, city and association 5 per cent each). The date is a placeholder: for the whole line the article only says mid-2030s. (LOK Report, 28 Jan 2026) Update (26 Aug 2026): The start of construction was officially marked at Falkeplatz on 18 June 2026, and the main works there have been under way since 21 July 2026; rebuilding Falkeplatz will take until 2028, while the rail ring including Hartmannstrasse is due in 2030. A preferred variant for the second section (Leipziger Strasse, 1.8 km) was presented on 26 August 2026 and goes to the city council in October 2026; construction there will not begin before 2030 (LOK Report, 26 Aug 2026).
