The upgrade of the double-track, electrified Leipzig–Dresden line (116 km, German Unity Transport Project No. 9) aims to cut travel time to about 47 minutes; Riesa is a key junction on the route with connections toward Chemnitz and Nossen, among others. While the Leipzig–Riesa (2002) and Dresden-Neustadt–Dresden Hbf (2010) sections are finished, the third construction phase, Riesa–Dresden-Neustadt, is still ongoing; overall completion is planned for 2030.
