Augsburg pushes tram Line 5 construction back to the 2030s

· Transport / rail

Location
Augsburg, Bavaria (Thelott district, Rosenaustraße/Pferseer Straße corridor to the university hospital) · 🇩🇪 Germany
Project
Augsburg: New tram Line 5 (main station – university hospital)
Investment
around EUR 60 million (per Wikipedia, for the roughly 4.3 km new line; not quantified on the project's own page)
Status
In planning – financing and final route alignment still unresolved; construction of Line 5 itself not expected to start before the mid-2030s

The planned roughly 4.3 km new tram line 5 would connect Augsburg's main station via the Thelott district (Rosenaustraße/Pferseer Straße) to the university hospital, with 8 planned stops, cutting travel time to about 17 minutes according to the operator's project page. The formal approval process, begun in 2021 and originally targeting completion "not before 2026," has since been significantly delayed per more recent sources (Wikipedia, hallo-augsburg.de, 2025/26): financing and the final route alignment remain unresolved, and construction is not expected to start before the mid-2030s. Only an isolated, roughly 200 m track section in Rosenaustraße with two 90-degree curves is planned as preparatory work starting around May 2026 (targeted completion late 2026); this is not equivalent to completion of Line 5 itself.
