The roughly 130-km, heavily used railway line between Ludwigshafen and Forbach (Gr) on the Mannheim–Saarbrücken corridor is to undergo a comprehensive DB "Generalsanierung" renewal of tracks, switches, catenary, bridges, culverts, retaining walls and several stations through the Palatinate Forest and Saarland, including a new stop "Saarbrücken Saarbasar". A months-long full closure is planned for the second half of 2029 (per current planning, 22 June to 7 December 2029), which municipalities, districts and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate oppose, demanding sectional renovation instead; no specific total investment figure has been published so far.
