The 4,205-metre Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel, opened in 1877 on the Moselle railway line between Cochem and Ediger-Eller, was fundamentally renovated between 2014 and 2017 by inserting a new single-track reinforced-concrete tube into the existing cross-section. Since 2 July 2017 the line has again been operated double-track, with one track per tunnel tube (the renovated old tube plus the new parallel tube opened in 2014). Renovation of the old tube was budgeted at roughly EUR 75 million, with the overall project (including the new tube) at around EUR 210 million.
