The new roughly eight-kilometre double-track Spessart ramp between Laufach and Heigenbrücken replaces the approximately 160-year-old single-track Schwarzkopf tunnel on the Hanau–Würzburg railway line. The old route was decommissioned on 15 June 2017, and the new alignment with four tunnels (including the 2.6 km Falkenberg tunnel) entered service in stages from 19 June 2017; on 6 November 2017 the second track was fully activated. Deutsche Bahn invested around EUR 450 million in the overall project.
