Since 2020 about EUR 161 million has gone into the networks in Frankfurt, Darmstadt and Kassel, of which about EUR 91 million to Frankfurt.
The federal government and the state of Hesse are providing VGF with a further EUR 20.55 million for the basic renewal of Frankfurt's roughly 67 km light-rail network (about EUR 13 million from the federal government, about EUR 7 million from the state); minister Kaweh Mansoori handed over the notice on 14 September 2026. The funded measures cost about EUR 35 million in total and are due to be completed by the end of 2029. Around 100 network points such as rectifier stations, track, switches and fire-alarm systems are to be renewed by 2029; the legal basis is the GVFG, whose provision for renewing municipal rail infrastructure runs only until 2030 (LOK Report, 14 Sep 2026).
