The Karlsruhe Combined Solution comprises a light-rail tunnel under the city centre (east-west tunnel 2.5 km, southern branch 0.9 km) plus a separate road tunnel beneath Kriegsstraße, freeing Kaiserstraße from tram traffic. The light-rail tunnel entered service with the timetable change on 12 December 2021 (ceremonial opening 11 December 2021); the road tunnel followed on 19 October 2022. Total project costs rose from an original 2002 estimate of EUR 530 million to roughly EUR 1.5 billion (as of 2020).
