As part of the second expansion stage of the Magdeburg rail junction, Deutsche Bahn took platforms 6, 7 and 8 at the main station out of service for eleven months starting 2 April 2017, rebuilding tracks, the overhead line, a railway bridge and new barrier-free platforms with elevators. This first construction phase ended on 4 March 2018; during that time trains used only platforms 1–5, 9 and the substitute platforms 10 and 13. A second construction phase then followed, rebuilding tracks 1–5, with the overall project (untangling entry/exit routes, higher line speeds) planned to run through 2019.
