The Niebüll ESTW is due to be fully running by spring 2028 and will replace nine mechanical signal boxes; around EUR 144 million is going into Marschbahn control and signalling by 2028. The first construction stage entered service in January 2026: track-change operation between Husum and Hattstedt was extended to both tracks, and signals were added between Hattstedt and Bredstedt and at Husum. Announced on 21 April 2026 as part of a five-point plan by the state and DB, which also provides for a path swap at the latest from the December 2026 timetable change and for modernising Westerland station by 2029. The date is a placeholder: the article only says "spring 2028". (LOK Report, 21 Apr 2026)
