Because of possible stress corrosion cracking in the prestressing steel, DB InfraGO is replacing the 1976 bridge superstructure under tracks 9 and 10 beside Erfurt main station; the project was announced on 10 March 2026 and demolition started at the end of July. The old structure (1,500 t) was lifted out in one piece on 18 August 2026, and the two new rolled girders were moved into place by heavy-load transporters on 2 and 9 September 2026. Trains were due to run again in the night to 1 October 2026 (report of 30 September 2026); the road underpass is now expected to reopen fully only from 20 November 2026, about three weeks later than planned, owing to delayed technical components.
