On 25 March 2026 the regional assembly cleared the way for a new S-Bahn line S7 from Heimerdingen via the Strohgäubahn and the refurbished Panoramabahn to Stuttgart-Vaihingen; the framework agreement between the five partners (state, Stuttgart, Strohgäubahn association, SWEG, region) funds design phases 1 and 2. The plans cover a 30-minute service, electrification of the Strohgäubahn, about ten extra trains and three new stations (Heilbronner Strasse, Lenzhalde, Herderplatz); costs are not given and federal GVFG funding is the aim.
