Line 1 of the Thessaloniki Metro is to receive a northwestern branch diverging at Dimokratias station and running via Neapoli, Terpsithea, Stavroupoli, Polichni and Efkarpia to a new terminus at Papageorgiou Hospital, where a second Line 1 depot is also planned. The originally planned circular line was scrapped by Elliniko Metro S.A. in autumn 2023 as structurally unfeasible and flawed in design, and replaced by this route. A tender for the extension is expected to be completed by 2027, with the Greek government seeking financing via the EU Regional Development Fund for the 2028-2032 cycle. The source gives neither a concrete investment figure nor a fixed opening date; construction has not yet begun.
