The canal expansion was built by the international consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC). The lead partner was Salini Impregilo (now Webuild, Italy), with Sacyr (Spain) and Jan De Nul (Belgium) as further consortium partners, alongside Panama's CUSA. The consortium won the construction contract in 2009 with a bid of about USD 3.2 billion and built the new lock systems on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides.
The Panama Canal's third set of locks was inaugurated on 26 June 2016 (maiden transit of the container ship Cosco Shipping Panama) and since then has allowed larger Post-Panamax vessels to transit via new locks on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides; total cost approx. USD 5.25 billion. It was built by the Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) consortium, led by Salini Impregilo/Webuild (Italy), with Sacyr (Spain) and Jan De Nul (Belgium) as European consortium partners.
