· Transport / rail

Location
Attica (East Attica): Koropi – Markopoulo – Kalyvia – Keratea – Lavrio · 🇬🇷 Greece
Project
Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) – Koropi–Lavrio extension
Investment
approx. EUR 391 million (net tender budget, as of 2022; earlier/parallel estimates range from EUR 160–300 million)
Status
In planning

The Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) is planned to be extended from Koropi via Markopoulo, Kalyvia and Keratea to the port of Lavrio (about 32 km, double-tracked and electrified as far as Thorikos, then single-track, with two new stations and several stops). According to operator ERGOSE the project remains in the planning stage (preliminary reconnaissance studies/Phase A completed); a tender launched in 2022 has not yet been awarded, and press reports (e.g. Athens Transport, January 2024) indicate the Greek government has deprioritized the project in favor of other rail schemes without announcing a new timeline. An earlier target set completion for 2029 (construction start 2024, five-year build time); given the documented delays it is unclear whether that date still holds.
