Line 2 of the Thessaloniki Metro runs 11.38 km from New Railway Station in the west to Mikra in the south-east. The extension section between 25 Martiou and Mikra, adding the five new stations Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini and Mikra, cost around EUR 570 million and, after repeated delays (originally planned for 2025), was scheduled to open in July 2026; Greek media cited late July, some specifically 28 July, as the opening date. The first section (New Railway Station–25 Martiou) has already been in operation since 2024. Update (27.08.2026): The July date was not met; the extension with its five new stations (about 4.8 km) was inaugurated on 27.08.2026 and opened to passengers at 15:00 the same day, with at least 60,000 daily passengers expected (Naftemporiki, 27.08.2026: https://www.naftemporiki.gr/society/2153910/live-ta-egkainia-tis-epektasis-toy-metro-thessalonikis-pros-tin-kalamaria/).
