The West Attica suburban line is being created by regauging and upgrading the former metre-gauge railway between Ano Liosia, Elefsina and Megara for local and freight traffic; because the EU recovery fund's condition to finish the works by 2026 could not be met, the funding was restructured and money is now available until 2030 (reported on 3 August 2026). The project is 53% complete (about EUR 56 million spent), but there are fears that it will drag on for a long time; the finance and transport ministries promise that it will be completed in any case. According to unconfirmed reports from July 2026 the project could even fail, because the municipality of Aspropyrgos demands a tunnel and Hellenic Petrol has a pipeline near the route; the municipality is said to be obstructing construction with rough tactics and clashing with the building contractor, while otherwise the schedule is said to be met. The date is a placeholder: the article gives no completion date, only the funding available until 2030, and the end of 2030 is used. (LOK Report, 10 Jul and 3 Aug 2026)
