After about three years' interruption, passenger trains have again run from Thessaloniki to Florina in north-west Macedonia since 30 May 2026: two train pairs run via Edessa to Florina and a further pair runs only to Edessa. The Edessa–Florina line had previously been upgraded so that it can be run faster and received improved safety systems; a test run was reported in early May 2026. The border crossing to North Macedonia at Neos Kafkassos/Kremenica, closed for years, was the subject of a question in parliament at the end of January 2026; the line has been renovated on both sides of the border. In addition, the Alexandroupoli–Ormenio line, interrupted by bad weather since the end of January 2026, was due to reopen on 31 May 2026 according to the report; the HEPOS positioning system was installed there.
