Definition
Spending on armed forces, defence ministries, paramilitary forces and military aid as defined by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Caveats
The EU value is the sum of 27 national budgets, not a joint capability: procurement and forces remain national. For China, SIPRI uses its own estimate, which is higher than the official budget. Spending says little about equipment and readiness.
