Definition

The number of years a newborn would live on average if the mortality of its year of birth applied throughout its life.

Caveats

A period measure: pandemic years lower it temporarily. Values for China partly rest on model estimates of the UN Population Division. It says nothing about how many of these years are spent in good health.
