On 27 July 2026 the government of Aragón granted final approval as a 'Proyecto de Interés General de Aragón' (PIGA) for the battery gigafactory of the Stellantis-CATL joint venture Contemporary Star Energy in Figueruelas, securing all construction permits for the scheme. This is a permitting milestone on an already running €4.1bn project rather than a new investment announcement: around 500 people currently work on the construction phase (peaking at up to 1,700), and the finished plant is to employ some 4,000 people producing 50 GWh of capacity a year. The first production lines are due to start up in early 2027. — Source: https://www.elespanol.com/aragon/economia/20260727/gigafactoria-stellantis-catl-culmina-tramitacion-avanza-iniciar-produccion-baterias/1003744334892_0.html

On 24 July 2026 the European Commission cleared, under the simplified procedure, the acquisition of sole control of Germany's THIMM Group by Spanish packaging manufacturer Saica. The deal mainly concerns corrugated board and corrugated packaging; the Commission saw no competition concerns given the limited resulting market position. Completion of the transaction is still pending. Outcome (24 August 2026): Saica and THIMM announced that the acquisition has been completed (closing); around 2,500 employees across plants in Germany, Poland, Czechia and Romania, including roughly 130 in Castrop-Rauxel, continue at their existing sites with no site closures announced.
