On 18 September 2026 Barilla presented a new industrial plan for southern Italy and is investing €100m in an integrated pasta hub in Foggia: a next-generation mill will be added alongside the existing pasta factory, replicating the integration model the company already runs in Parma. The works are to be carried out between 2028 and 2030. The plan holds out the prospect of new employment, but no figure for new jobs was given (ANSA, 18 Sep 2026; l'Immediato, 18 Sep 2026). — Source: https://www.ansa.it/emiliaromagna/notizie/2026/09/18/barilla-investe-100-milioni-al-sud-nuovo-polo-della-pasta-a-foggia_6e0a55f7-673c-442a-b423-2f46ca7ab403.html

On 11 September 2026 the Milan Court of Appeal (civil division) rejected the request by Acciaierie d'Italia and the ex-Ilva in extraordinary administration to suspend its order of 27 July 2026; the shutdown of the hot area (area a caldo: blast furnaces, coke ovens, steel shop) of the Taranto steelworks must therefore be implemented by 28 October 2026 (ANSA; second source Adnkronos: https://www.adnkronos.com/cronaca/ex-ilvia-richiesta-corte-appello-milano_n2YkdnowV40f9kZ6iR4Da). The court held that the right to health prevails over economic interests. The sources do not quantify the hot area's directly affected employees (null); the roughly 2,500 employees of the 28 supplier firms are already recorded as entry 05bc5af3 (layoffs) and are not double-counted here. The unions Fim, Fiom and Uilm are demanding the government's extraordinary social and relaunch plan for the ex-Ilva. Update (10 Oct 2026): on 8 October 2026 Acciaierie d'Italia suspended all production in the Taranto hot area from 9 October and applied for short-time work (cassa integrazione); the Genoa and Novi Ligure plants, which take their feedstock from Taranto, are to halt temporarily by 15 November 2026. The Court of Cassation hearing remains set for 20 October 2026; the unions called a 24-hour strike (Il Post, 8 Oct 2026). Update (17.10.2026): According to union sources, Acciaierie d'Italia is asking to extend short-time working from the current 4,450 to up to 8,622 of its 9,626 employees until 28.02.2027 (single-source report; up to 6,964 of 7,875 in Taranto, 870 of 917 in Genoa, 515 of 542 in Novi Ligure) (La Repubblica, 17.10.2026). — Sources: https://www.ansa.it/sito/notizie/topnews/2026/09/11/i-giudici-confermano-il-blocco-dellarea-a-caldo-dellex-ilva_d81712ef-1556-4f59-80fa-f2d41d8c35f9.html · https://www.ilpost.it/2026/10/08/ex-ilva-genova-novi-ligure-taranto/ · https://www.repubblica.it/economia/2026/10/17/news/ex_ilva_raddoppia_cassa_integrazione-425654015/

📉 Ex-Ilva suppliers start cutting 2,500 jobs in Taranto (Italy)

On 4 September 2026, 28 supplier firms of the former Ilva steelworks in Taranto opened collective redundancy procedures for around 2,500 employees, after the Milan Court of Appeal had ordered on 27 July 2026 that the plant's hot-metal area be shut within 90 days unless asbestos sources and emissions were addressed. Under government pressure the dismissals were temporarily suspended; a crisis meeting was held at Palazzo Chigi on 8 September 2026 to freeze the procedure and find safety-net measures (Il Fatto Quotidiano, 4 September 2026). The figure is recorded as initiated cuts; outcome open. Update (11 September 2026): On 9 September 2026 the Aigi association suspended the 28 suppliers' collective redundancy procedures at the government's request pending the Milan Court of Appeal's decision (Il Post, 9 September 2026); on 11 September 2026, however, the court rejected the suspension request and confirmed the shutdown of the hot area by 28 October 2026 (see closures entry) — the dismissals therefore remain acute. Update (21 Sept 2026): On 16 Sept 2026, during the government-union meeting at Palazzo Chigi, it emerged that the Court of Cassation had brought forward to 20 Oct 2026 the hearing on the extraordinary commissioners' appeal against the Milan ruling — eight days before the shutdown deadline. The employers' associations Aigi and Aepi then stated they would suspend the roughly 2,500 dismissals in the supplier network at least until the Cassation ruling; the decree-law with worker protection measures was postponed until "the overall picture is clearer" (Adnkronos, 16 Sept 2026). — Source: https://www.lapresse.it/economia/2026/09/05/ex-ilva-le-aziende-dellindotto-mandano-2500-lettere-di-licenziamento/

LyondellBasell (Basell Poliolefine Italia) confirmed to the Apulia region the definitive closure of its Brindisi plant by 31 December 2026 — including shutdown of the PP2 polypropylene unit and planned demolition of the P9T unit. Around 80 remaining employees are affected; unions Uil and Uiltec are protesting, and social-plan negotiations are due to start in September. Update (18 Sep 2026): At a meeting at Confindustria Brindisi, the union Femca Cisl demanded that the PP2 plant be placed into conservation from 1 January 2027 rather than dismantled, that the full workforce be retained, and that any recourse to the wage-supplement fund (cassa integrazione) be deferred to 1 July 2027. A follow-up meeting is set for 7 October 2026, at which the union representatives will put the proposal to management for assessment (Telenorba, 18 Sep 2026). — Source: https://www.brindisireport.it/economia/brindisi-chiusura-basell-stabilimento-abbandona-citta-ottanta-lavoratori-rischio.html

On 14 May 2026 Siemens Mobility agreed to acquire the core businesses of Italy's MERMEC group: wayside signalling in Italy, electrification, telecommunications and the worldwide diagnostics and data-analytics business built around measurement trains. These units have about 1,700 employees, supply customers in more than 70 countries and generated roughly EUR 430 million in revenue in 2025; seller Angelo Holding keeps AngelStar, Compagnie des Signaux and MERMEC Deutschland, which will continue as Angel Signaling (about 800 employees, order backlog of roughly EUR 2 billion). The parties are not disclosing financial terms, completion is expected at the end of 2026, and Angelo Holding president Vito Pertosa cites his retirement and health as reasons for the sale (LOK Report, 14 May 2026). Update (20.10.2026): On 20 Oct 2026 the European Commission cleared Siemens Mobility Holding's acquisition of sole control of MerMec without competition concerns (case M.12478; LOK Report). — Sources: https://www.lok-report.de/news/deutschland/industrie/siemens-erwerb-der-kerngeschaefte-von-mermec.html · https://www.lok-report.de/news/deutschland/industrie/angel-mer-mec-verkauft-sein-geschaeft-im-bereich-diagnostik-datenanalytik-und-streckensignalisierung-in-italien-an-siemens.html · https://www.lok-report.de/news/europa/europaeische-union/europaeische-union-kommission-genehmigt-uebernahme-von-mermec-durch-siemens.html
