SBB is taking a 49% stake in Helsana's occupational health subsidiary HMS and will control it jointly with Helsana; the price is confidential and closing was planned for the end of October 2026. HMS carries out about 12,000 medical examinations a year for SBB alone; the European Commission cleared the deal the same day as case M.12356 (Keystone-SDA via nau.ch, 17 September 2026). — Sources: https://www.nau.ch/news/wirtschaft/sbb-steigen-mit-49-prozent-bei-helsana-tochter-hms-ein-67177764 · https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/mex_26_1894

SBB is transferring SBB Cargo AG into SBB AG for accounting purposes as of 1 January 2027 and will run it together with SBB Cargo International (75 per cent owned by SBB AG) and ChemOil Logistics (100 per cent) as the Freight division; employees move to SBB AG on 1 June 2027 without any change to their terms of employment. This completes the process begun in 2023 with the full takeover of SBB Cargo; the goal remains self-sustaining freight operations by 2033. The half-year report for 2026 shows freight breaking even for the first time in a long while, with a result of CHF 2 million.
SBB has opened a hall extension of about 6,500 m² with six work bays at its Olten works; construction took roughly two years and the official opening was on 6 February 2026. Exterior surfaces of trains can be painted, bonded, ground, welded and sandblasted there, and a transfer table with a transport bridge plus an air-conditioned bonding track make the facility unique in Switzerland so far. It plays a key role in renewing the Zurich S-Bahn fleets (69 Regio-Dosto and 61 double-deck multiple units), which are to stay in service seven years longer; more than CHF 500 million is being invested in total. (LOK Report, 6 Feb 2026) Update (6 February 2026): SBB officially opened the hall extension in Olten on 6 February 2026; painting, welding and blasting take place at six new bays.
🔄 SBB awards framework contracts for digital interlockings worth CHF 1.4bn (Switzerland)

On 7 October 2025 SBB awarded the contract to digitise its interlockings to Hitachi, Siemens and Stadler Rail: framework agreements for ten years with three five-year extension options and 25 years of maintenance, with a procurement volume of about CHF 1.4 billion. Individual installations will then be awarded continuously in competition among the three partners; the almost 500 existing interlockings are to be modernised (about half are still relay installations from the 1950s), roughly 80% of them within 20 years, with the first commissioning planned from 2029 and the whole programme lasting about 40 years. Siemens Mobility reported signing its framework agreement in early November 2025 (Signaling X concept, with interlocking logic moved into central data centres); SBB put the final signing with all three firms in the week before 17 December 2025 and stressed that most of the value added arises in Switzerland.
