Amazon is investing more than €300 m to convert its Pforzheim logistics site in the Buchbusch industrial estate into a robotics fulfilment centre. More than 1,000 additional jobs are to be created by the end of 2029, roughly doubling the workforce to over 2,000. Small and medium-sized items will in future be picked with the help of flat transport robots that drive entire shelving units to the workstations.
Amazon is cutting up to 30,000 corporate jobs (around 10% of the corporate workforce out of a total of 1.58 mn employees). The wave of layoffs could begin as early as next week. Affected areas include Amazon Web Services (AWS), Prime Video, Retail and the HR area 'People Experience and Technology'. This would be the largest job cut in Amazon's corporate history (for comparison: in 2022 Amazon parted with around 27,000 employees). Employees affected in the previous round of layoffs remain on the payroll for a further 90 days and can reapply internally or reorient externally. Update (28 January 2026): Amazon carried out a second round affecting about 16,000 roles; together with the 14,000 cut in October that comes to about 30,000.
Amazon is withdrawing from operating Amazon-owned grocery stores and closing all Amazon Fresh grocery stores as well as Amazon Go convenience stores in the USA. Reason: Amazon was unable to create a 'truly compelling differentiated customer experience' with an economic model that supports large-scale expansion. Some affected locations are to be converted into Whole Foods stores (Amazon takeover 2017). Amazon will in future focus on Whole Foods and grocery delivery services rather than keeping underperforming concepts in limbo. — Source: https://techcrunch.com/2026/01/27/amazon-is-closing-its-physical-amazon-go-and-amazon-fresh-stores/
